Meth History:Methamphetamine was first synthesized from ephedrine in Japan in 1893 by chemist Nagayoshi Nagai. In 1919, crystallized methamphetamine was synthesized by Akira Ogata via reduction of ephedrine using red phosphorus and iodine. The related compound amphetamine was first synthesized in Germany in 1887 by Lazăr Edeleanu.World War IIOne of the earliest uses of methamphetamine was during World War II when the German military dispensed it under the trade name Pervitin. It was widely distributed across rank and division, from elite forces to tank crews and aircraft personnel. Chocolates dosed with methamphetamine were known as Fliegerschokolade ("flyer's chocolate") when given to pilots, or Panzerschokolade ("tanker's chocolate") when given to tank crews. From 1942 until his death in 1945, Adolf Hitler was given frequent intravenous injections of methamphetamine by his personal physician, Theodor Morell as a treatment for depression and fatigue. It is possible that it was used to treat Hitler's speculated Parkinson's disease, or that his Parkinson-like symptoms which developed from 1940 onwards were related to use of methamphetamine.Post-war useAfter World War II, a large supply of amphetamine, formerly stockpiled by the Japanese military, became available in Japan under the street name shabu (also Philopon, pronounced ヒロポン, or Hiropon, a tradename). The Japanese Ministry of Health banned it in 1951; and its prohibition is thought to have added to the growing yakuza-activities related to illicit drug production. Today, methamphetamine is still associated with the Japanese underworld, but its usage is discouraged by strong social taboos. In the 1950s there was a rise in the legal prescription of methamphetamine to the American public. According to the 1951 edition of Pharmacology and Therapeutics by Arthur Grollman, it was to be prescribed for "narcolepsy, post-encephalitic Parkinsonism, alcoholism, ... in certain depressive states... and in the treatment of obesity."The 1960s saw the start of significant use of clandestinely manufactured methamphetamine as well as methamphetamine created in users' own homes for personal use. The recreational use of methamphetamine peaked in the 1980s. The December 2, 1989 edition of The Economist described San Diego, California as the "methamphetamine capital of North America."[citation needed]In 2000, The Economist again described San Diego, California as the methamphetamine capital of North America, and South Gate, California as the second capital city.Legal restrictionsIn 1983 laws were passed in the United States prohibiting possession of precursors and equipment for methamphetamine production; this was followed a month later by a bill passed in Canada enacting similar laws. In 1986 the U.S. government passed the Federal Controlled Substance Analogue Enforcement Act in an attempt to curb the growing use of designer drugs. Despite this, or perhaps in part because of this, usage of methamphetamine expanded throughout rural United States, especially through the Midwest and South.Since 1989 five U.S. federal laws and dozens of state laws have been imposed in an attempt to curb the production of methamphetamine. Methamphetamine can be produced in home laboratories using pseudoephedrine or ephedrine, the active ingredients in over-the-counter drugs such as Sudafed and Contac. However, preventative legal strategies of the past 17 years have steadily increased restrictions to the distribution of pseudoephedrine/ephedrine-containing products. As a result of the U.S. Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005, a subsection of the PATRIOT Act, there are restrictions on the amount of pseudoephedrine and ephedrine one may purchase in a specified time period, and further requirements that these products must be stored in order to prevent theft. Sea Grant drug event protects Lake Erie Erie, PA residents dropped off about 600 pounds of medicine and personal care products on April 26, 2008 at the Cruise Boat Terminal Building during the Pennsylvania Sea Grant pharmaceutical collection.Located behind the Dr. Raymond Blasco Memorial Library, the collection brought in over 73,000 pills and lots of controlled substances like narcotics, said Sara Grisè, PA Sea Grant coastal outreach specialist.---Results:87 participantsCollected 120 gallons of materials5 of the 120 gallons were controlled substancesAbout 600 pounds worth of medicine and personal care productsControlled total: 3,839 pillsNon-Controlled total: 69,232 pills Personal Care products: 384---The Keep Unwanted Medicine out of Lake Erie Medicine Collection Day was part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge. The challenge involved over 100 collections across eight states. Lake Erie's reputation especially in the 1960s and 1970s was an extremely polluted and even dead lake. By all accounts, residents and officials have done a great job restoring Lake Erie - where fishing, boating and swimming are popular. The EPA Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan helped the recovery of Lake Erie. Officials have been fighting the Zebra Muscle problem in Lake Erie. One pharmaceutical collection goal was to prevent medicine s from being discharged into Lake Erie and make sure drugs don't end up in other lakes and streams. Many wastewater treatment plants around the world are not designed to remove the cocktail of chemicals after the drugs are flushed or dumped down the drain - and the drugs can leach out of landfills into the groundwater.Unsung heros at pharmaceuticals collections are police and pharmacists without whom the collections wouldn't be possible. Erie Police, pharmacists accepted pharmaceuticals.Based on experience, organizers discovered the turnout was bigger when residents don't have to preregister. Of 87 residents participating in the collection, 61 did not preregister. And similar to the other collections, most Erie participants were older adults as 89 percent were over the age of 46.Assisting the event was ECS & R - Environmental Coordination Services and Recycling in Cochranton, PA.Organizers of the Erie collection included PA Sea Grant, the City of Erie, Lake Erie-Allegheny Earth Force, LECOM School of Pharmacy, and Erie Times-News in Education.Organizers partnered with WJET-TV Erie Green Campaign. WSEE TV provided their news story for use in this video. The PA Sea Grant received a grant from the United States EPA (EPA). The goal of the EPA Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge was the collecting and recycling of one million pounds of electronics (e-Waste) plus the collection and proper disposal of one million pills. The EPA says those goals were exceeded by 400 to 500 percent. The Earth Healing Initiative assisted some challenge organizers by offering interfaith liaisons to volunteer and encourage members of local churches and temples to participate in the Earth Day related events in their area. This video on the projects connected to the Great Lakes 2008 Earth Day Challenge was made possible by a grant from the US EPA in collaboration with the EPA's Region 5 office, EPA Great Lakes National Program Office in Chicago and the non-profit Interfaith Earth Healing Initiative in Marquette, MI.The EHI involves American Indian tribes and a coalition of churches, synagogues and other faith traditions joining together to heal, protect and defend the environment.Greg Peterson, Earth Healing TV---Sara GrisèPA Sea Grant814-217-9011www.pserie.psu.edu/seagrant/seagindex.htmEPA Region 5www.epa.gov/region5ECS&Rwww.ecsr.netWJET-TVyourerie.com/content/greenWSEE TVwww.wsee.tvErie Times-Newswww.goerie.comCity of Eriewww.ci.erie.pa.uswww.ci.erie.pa.us/Departments/PoliceDepartment/tabid/72/Default.aspxLake Erie-Allegheny Earth Forcewww.earthforce.org/section/offices/leaLECOM school of Pharmacywww.lecom.edu/school_pharmacy.phpPhotos by Pat Noble,WikiProject Eriewww.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pnoble805www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ErieJim's Photos Unixdoctorwww.unixdoctor.com/gallery/albums.phpLake Erie map graphic Lawrence W. The Coming Control of ALL Food Supply

Posted on July 20, 2008 in Albert einstein college of medicine

The Coming Control of ALL Food Supply through Codex Alimentarius. The first step to understanding Codex Alimentarius is to realize that it has absolutely nothing to do with "consumer protection". That's propaganda for the sake of getting people and Congress to yield to its implementation. Rima E. Laibow, M.D. is a successful natural migraine medicines physician who graduated from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1970. Dr. Laibow has studied more than 16,000 pages of Codex Alimentarius documentation. Her conclusion? Codex Alimentarius is a very serious threat to health freedom. We must take it seriously.Rima E. Laibow, M.D. is also wife of Major General Albert (Bert) N. Stubblebine III (U.S. Army, Retired). Bert is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, class of 52) who enjoyed a distinguished 32 year career in the U.S. Army during which he commanded soldiers at every level. After his retirement he served as the VP for Intelligence Systems with BDM, a major defense contractor. He has taken this set of experiences and become involved in leading-edge medical research and development in collaboration with his wife Rima E. Laibow, M.D.He is a long-term way-out-of-the-box thinker who redesigned the U.S. Army's Intelligence architecture while serving as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Intelligence School and Center and helped to define the requirements of the U.S. Army for future conflict. The re-design earned his place in the Intelligence Hall of Fame. Many of the innovations he develop helped the U.S. to conduct the First Gulf War effectively and swiftly with a very low casualty rate. He also commanded the U.S. Army's Electronic Research and Development Command (ERADCOM) and the U.S. Army's Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM).Having defended his country for 32 years and having then worked for the remainder of his career to build better ways of being and becoming well, Bert is determined not to let the forces which are threatening American's health freedoms prevail.U.S. Government Illegally Supports Codex The U.S. Codex Office (the U.S. Codex "point of contact") is unfortunately highly supportive of Codex. So is the rest of the government, including the pharmaceutical friendly FDA. They should not be. DSHEA and other U.S. law means their support is in direct violation of the laws of the U.S.A.! They are breaking our laws and they know it.Let's Enter Coordinal Relationships With Congress Congress has the power to keep America Codex-free. It can defeat bills designed to destroy DSHEA, support health freedom bills, and reprimand the U.S. Codex Office and the FDA. Using the Internet we can reach Congress directly to create a lobby of the people, for the people. Families of Congress would suffer too, if Codex is not averted. Thanks to the Internet, millions of health conscious Americans can unite to protect health freedom from Codex Alimentarius. We have the power to turn Codex into a blessing if all of us in the natural health community use it to get active, get organized, and stand up for health freedom. Together, we will let Big Pharma know that we see through their deception and will protect our access to natural health care. http://www.healthfreedomusa.org Author: hellyh72 Keywords: u.s. soldiers army government food supply control consumer protection medicine health care freedom codex alimentarius Added: July 16, 2008 Lisa Nathan's Obstetric Fistula Research Presentation IIIB Segment of Lisa Nathan, MD, MPH presenting her research at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Patients can begin registering and qualifying on December 30, 2005.FDA has developed stronger requirements to prevent fetal exposure to the drug Accutane (isotretinoin) along with its generic equivalents, such as Amnesteem, Sotret and Claravis. Isotretinoin is used to treat severe, recalcitrant, nodular acne, but it can cause serious birth defects if taken by pregnant women. These requirements are now going into effect in a new program called iPLEDGE. Under this program, wholesalers, prescribers, pharmacies and patients, both men and women, must register. Also, women who are capable of becoming pregnant must have two negative pregnancy tests before isotretinoin can be dispensed to them. They also must have a negative pregnancy test each month while taking the drug. Isotretinoin is now a restricted distribution drug. This means that wholesalers won't be able to distribute the drug, pharmacists won't be able to dispense it, physicians won't be able to prescribe it, and patients won't be able to receive it unless they register. Doctors, patients, and pharmacies can obtain program information and register with iPLEDGE either online or by telephone at 1-866-495-0654. There is also a possible link between taking this drug and depression, suicidality, and psychosis. And for that reason, FDA has strengthened the labeling to help practitioners and patients identify and manage these risks.Any patient being treated with this drug should be carefully monitored for symptoms of depression, or suicidalility or psychosis. Patients should be told to stop the drug and contact their health professional if they experience any of these symptoms. Stopping the drug by itself, however, may not be sufficient. Psychiatric evaluation and intervention may be needed to prevent patients from harming themselves. For example, FDA has received reports of mix-ups between several drugs that all begin with the letter "T": Toprol-XL, a beta-blocker, Topamax, which is used to treat epilepsy and prevent migraine, and Tegretol or Tegretol-XR, another anti-epileptic. These mix-ups have occurred when prescriptions for these products were poorly written, misinterpreted, or incorrectly labeled or dispensed. Computer selection errors also played a role. In a number of cases, patients suffered adverse events because of these errors, and in some cases they had to be hospitalized. The similarity between the product names was reported to be a key factor in these errors. Also, these drugs are often stored close to each other on pharmacy shelves and there's some overlap between the available dosage strengths of these products. The manufacturers of Toprol-XL, Topamax, and Tegretol/Tegretol-XR recently sent letters to healthcare professionals and pharmacists, alerting them to this name confusion and suggesting ways to reduce the potential for dispensing errors. For example, prescribers should use both brand and generic name, as well as indication, when writing prescriptions. Pharmacists could physically separate the products on stock shelves and use "shelf talkers" as needed. American Medicine MisManaged Care

Posted on July 20, 2008 in List of united states pharmacies and drug stores

Healthcare in America is too expensive because it is catawampus, askew, awry, and uncoordinated. But we can have universal healthcare, include pharmacy, improve quality, save lives and save $billions, easily and simply. The author has been a practicing physician for over 40 years, the Medical Director of a 250 physician Medial Group, served on committees for HMOs, and authored a book entitled "American Medicine - MisManaged Care".He has hands-on knowledge of how the works. We spend over $1.34 trillion annually on healthcare in the United States. Nearly half of that money is wasted on inefficient administration. Canada manages its healthcare administration on 15%. A GAO report concluded that "the U.S. health insurance system is a complex and administratively expensive arrangement. It is characterized by a multitude of insurers, both private and public, each with its own eligibility requirements, benefits, packages, provider rules, and claim forms."In the Economist, Henry J. Aaron, Ph.D. wrote: "I look at the U.S. health care system and see a monstrosity, a truly bizarre mélange of thousands of payers with payment systems that differ for no socially beneficial reason, as well as staggeringly complex public systems with mind boggling administered prices and other rules expressing distinctions that can only be regarded as weird."
